What are Formwork, Shuttering, Centering, Staging, and Scaffolding?

Table of Contents

Formwork:

Any arrangement to support fresh concrete to attain its full strength and shape is known as formwork. It can be a vertical or horizontal arrangement to keep concrete in position. Formwork is removed after concrete gains full strength.

In the below image I have shown formwork for footing.

Shuttering:

Formwork that supports the vertical surface is known as shuttering. Example- Column, Footing, Retaining walls. So we can say shuttering is a type of formwork to support vertical surfaces.

In the below image I have shown shuttering work for the columns.

Centering:

Formwork that supports horizontal surfaces is called centering. Example- formwork for the floor, floor beam bottom, slab, etc.

It is a type of formwork that support only horizontal surface. In the below image you can see the centring work for slab.

Staging:

Material such as wooden bullies, pipes, prop support, coupler, and the cup-lock system used to support the framework is called staging.

Scaffolding:

A platform provided for workers around the building to work at the higher places of building pipe tube and coupler, bamboo or wooden, suspended scaffolding.
