Metamorphism is the process in which existing rock converts into igneous rock. This new rock consist of different chemical composition. Texture of the new rock is different from the original rock. High temperature is necessary for metamorphism. Temperature of metamorphism process occurs between 150 °C to 200 °C. Weathering and diagenesis, which are changes that occur at or near the Earth’s surface, are not the same as metamorphism.

Original rocks which are exposed to metamorphism can be igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

Process Description

Metamorphism is a lengthy process and completed in various steps. The physical and chemical properties of the rock is changed without too much melting.

Heat breaks atomic connections, which frees the atoms to migrate and make new bonds with other atoms, allowing rock to be changed without melting. The pore fluid that exists between mineral grains is a crucial conduit for atom exchange. This enables the crystallization of new minerals with various crystalline structures or chemical compositions as well as the recrystallization of already existing minerals. The transition changes the protolithic minerals into forms that are more stable under the pressure and temperature necessary for metamorphism to occur.
