There are 4 types of stress which a material can observe.
I have listed these four types of stress.
- Tensile Stress
- Compressive Stress
- Shear Stress
- Thermal Stress
Now we will learn about above mentioned types of stress in detail.
Let’s get started.
Table of Contents
1. Tensile Stress
When an object is under tension or tensile stress, the stress induced in it is called tensile stress. The breaking point under tensile load is called tensile breaking stress.
2. Compressive Stress
When a body is under compressive or compressive stress, the stress induced in it is called compressive stress. The limit of failure under compressive loading is known as the compressive stress at break.
3. Shear Stress
When two equal and opposite forces act on parallel faces of a body, the resulting stress is called shear stress. This stress tends to deform the shape of the body without changing its volume.
4. Thermal Stress
When a body resists expansion and changes its thermal state, it develops a certain amount of stress known as thermal stress. Thermal stress occurs only when the body cannot expand.
