A circlip consists of a circle and a clip. The other names of this clip are Jesus clip, snap ring, rotor ring, or C-clip. Circlip is a clamp-like geometry. A clamp is a retaining ring or lanyard consisting of a semi-ductile metal ring with an opening that can be snapped into place and fitted into a machined slot on a pin or other element to allow rotation but stop lateral movement.
Circlips are used to ensure a secure connection. When a snap ring is used to hold a wrist pin or wrist pin, the snap ring is called a wrist pin clip, wrist pin retainer, or wrist pin clip. Retaining rings are most commonly used in turbines, compressors, pumps, and motors.

How to Install Circlip
Installing the external clip is not that complicated. Follow the steps below to install the external lock ring.
- First, select the external snap ring pliers that fit the holes at the end of the snap ring.
- Then insert the tip of the pliers.
- Attach the tip of the pliers to the handle attached to the end of the retaining ring.
- Grab the handle. This opens the tip of the pliers and expands the snap ring.
- Place the ring in the ring groove to complete the mounting process.
It should be remembered that the snap ring has holes in the sheet metal, so the sides are rough and smooth. Clips should be mounted with the smooth side in half and the rough side on the outside to prevent damage.
Types of Circlip
- External circlip
- Internal circlip
The External circlip is used for the shaft and the Internal circlip is used for the bore.
Uses of C Clips
Seager rings, yes clamps, clips, or retaining rings are the most common fasteners used to hold knock pins in place in machined slots. These clips allow rotation but limit lateral movement of the knock pin and shaft.
