What is Parent Rock?

Parent rock is the original rock from which other types of rocks are formed. Parent rock also called Substratum. Substratum is the parent material for various rock formation such as sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock and igneous rock. Parent rock is source of soil natural soil formation.

Natural rocks which are not exposed to high pressure and high temperature also known as parent rock. Material which is extracted from parent rock is called parent material.

Soon after being exposed to the Earth’s surface, the parent rocks would undergo weathering, and the weathering process is greatly influenced by time, hydrogeological conditions, geomorphological evolution, and climate.

These exo genetic activities surely affect the accumulation of soil during weathering and the creation of the rock, as well as the rate of weathering and preservation of the regolith.
