Before starting the discussion about the Difference Between Short Column And Long Column, let’s get a brief idea about the short column and the long column.
Table of Contents
Short Column
If the ratio of the effective length of a column to its least lateral dimension does not exceed 12, it is known as a short column. The radius of gyration for the short column is always less than the long column.
Long Column
If the ratio of the effective length of a column to its least lateral dimension exceeds 12, it is known as a long column.
Difference Between Short Column And Long Column
Short Column | Long Column | |
---|---|---|
Length | The ratio of the effective length of a column to its least lateral dimension does not exceed 12 | The ratio of the effective length of a column to its least lateral dimension exceeds 12 |
Slenderness | Slenderness is less than 12 | Slenderness is more than 12 |
The radius of gyration. | The radius of gyration is less | The higher radius of gyration |
Load | The load-carrying capacity of the short column is more than the long column. | Load-carrying capacity is less compared to the short column with the same cross-sectional area. |
Strength | Stronger than long column and highly preferable. | Weaker than short column and normally not preferred. |
Stress | It is subjected to compressive stress. | It is subjected to buckling stress |
Failure | Mechanical failure primarily occurs due to shearing. | Long columns failed due to buckling. |
