What Is Earthen Dam?
The earthen dam is a type of embankment dam made up of several layers of appropriate thickness of compacted earth. Soil is compacted by mechanical equipments. Earthen dam also called as earth dam.
An earthen dam is constructed by compacting layers of earth, creating a core out of the most resistant elements, and depositing more permeable materials along the upstream and downstream sides.
Description Of Earthen Dam
An earth dam is constructed using mechanically compacted layers of 300 mm thickness. To get the highest in-situ density, the material must have a moisture content that is relatively close to its “optimum” value.
The best way to compact soils that need to be flexible, like the core material, is typically to keep them somewhat moist. The earth cannot be compacted if it is too damp. The placement water content is at or slightly below the recommended value to generate the firmer soil that is frequently employed in the shoulders.
Effective compaction is impossible if the soil is excessively dry, which is the other extreme of the range. To ensure compliance, control testing of the fill materials is required both at the borrow pit and after placement.
