Signs of Soil Subsidence

Various Symptoms of Soil Subsidence

In the below list, I have listed diffrent signs of soil subsidence.

  • Cracks in the superstructure tend to open more during the dry season and close during the wet season.
  • Cracks are found on the inside and outside of brick walls and run diagonally across the wall. They are wider at the top than at the bottom.
  • The width of the crack exceeds 3 mm. Cracks can be seen near the windows and doors.
  • The water content of the top layer of soil under the foundation has recently decreased.
  • Concrete slabs have no crack crossings. Crack is single wire.
  • Exterior walls tend to move outward at the top.
  • The concrete driveway is either in poor condition or broken open. The increasing time variation indicates that bedrock-level strain increases seasonally over time, especially in the dry months.
  • The base grows around a few years ago and has the shape of a bowl with the nadir near the center.
  • Especially in the dry season, there is no gap between the outer foundation beams and the horizontally adjacent ground.
  • The soil plasticity index is over 25.
  • Pocket penetrometer readings on the ground near the depression are high. The ground beneath the leveling board is difficult to survey more than 1 to 2 inches and is dry when dug.
  • Large tree roots are visible on the plane, extending towards the structure.
