What is Stratum?

In this article we will discuss special type of rock called stratum . Stratum or strata is consist of different layers.

Let’s discuss more about stratum in the field of geology.

Introduction of Stratum

Stratum is a type of rock which consists of various layers. Stratum also known as strata. All the layers in the stratum have different geological properties. The uper surface of the stratum is known as bedding surface. Various layers of the strata have different thickness.

Description

Layers are usually one of several parallel layers stacked on top of each other to form very thick layers. The buffer surfaces separating the strata represent temporary interruptions in sedimentation associated with periodic erosion, cessation of sedimentation, or a combination of both.

Individual strata, together with others, can form aggregate stratigraphic units that cover hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of the Earth’s surface. Individual layers can also cover large areas. Stratigraphy often appears as bands of material of different colors or textures exposed in cliffs, cuts, quarries, and riverbanks.

The individual tapes vary in thickness from a few millimeters to several meters or more. A band can represent a particular type of deposit such as river silt, beach sand, coal swamp, dunes, lava bed, etc.

Conclusion

Other rock types may include strata, but the word strata is reserved for sedimentary rocks, rocks composed of discrete fragments of minerals and other rocks. Formation of strata is known as stratification.
