Types of Belt Drive

Introduction:

The belts are commonly used for transmitting the power with the help of a pulley from one shaft to another. There are various factors that can decide the amount of power which are supposed to be transmitted through the belt. These are some main factors – It depends on the belt’s velocity, the tension in the belt, area of contact between belt and pulley, etc.

Belt Drive Selection Factors:

Before we discuss the types of belt drive. It is very important to understand the factor which affects the drive. So before choosing a belt drive these things we have to keep in our mind.

⦁ The driver and driven shaft speed which we required for operation.
⦁ The decreasing ratio of speed which we required for the operation.
⦁ The amount of power which we have to transmit.
⦁ Distance between shafts centers during the operation.
⦁ The layout or geometry of the shaft is suitable for the operation.
⦁ Space is available for installing the shaft or belts for operation.
⦁ The kind of service you can provide for the operation

Types of Belt Drive

There are three categories for the belt drives, and these are –

⦁ Light Drive
⦁ Medium Drive
⦁ Heavy Drive

Light Drive:

In light drive, the power transmission will be very small and the speed of the belt will also be slow. In light drive, the speed of the belt will be around 10 m/s. The light belt drives are used in agricultural machinery and in small machining operations where a small amount of power needs to be transmitted.

Medium Drive:

In medium drive, the power transmission will be of the medium amount and the speed of the belt will be also in the medium range but higher than the light drive belt speed. In medium drive, the belt speed will be above 10 m/s but less than 22 m/s. The medium belt drives are used in small-scale industries to perform various operations where only a medium amount of power is required.

Heavy Drive:

In heavy drives, the power transmission will be of a very high amount and the speed of the belt will also be very fast. In heavy drives, the speed of the belt will be above 22 m/s and it can increase according to the operational needs. The heavy belt drives are used in the big scale industries to perform the various powerful operations where a high amount of power transmission is required. In compressors and generators, a heavy drive is used.
