What is Ranging Rod in Surveying?

Ranging rod in surveying is a particular type of rod used to mark the location of stations, aim at those stations and measure straight lines. Diffrent material can be used to make ranging rod but steel and aluminum ranging rods are most common. Sticks are usually about 30 mm in diameter, 2 meter or 3 meter long and are painted with alternating stripes of Red and white.

Red and white alternative colors are used so that ranging rod look better when traveling long distances or in bad weather. Sometimes longer rods upto 6 meter length are used for large area.

Tips: Ranging rod should be straight while taking reading. If it is tilted, reading will be wrong.

Uses of Ranging Rod in Surveying

Ranging rod is placed on various points on the ground surface to take reading. This reading is used to identify the level. Survey intrument is fixed at one place and ranging rod is placed at diffrent location.
