This article is all about Petrol Engine vs Diesel engine.
Petrol Engine:
- The petrol engine works on the principle of the Otto cycle.
- The Otto cycle has two isochoric processes and two isentropic processes.
- The petrol engine is an IC engine which uses an electric spark plug to ignite the fuel in the combustion chamber
- In a petrol engine, the fuel and air mixed before going into the combustion chamber.
- The petrol engine has carburettor which mixed fuel and air before it enters the cylinder.
- The petrol engine has low compression ratio comparatively.
- In the petrol engine, high volatile fuel is used so it can be ignited easily just by a spark.
- The petrol engine is ideal for lighter vehicles.
- The petrol engine consumes higher fuel comparatively.
- The petrol engine has a low maintenance cost compared to the diesel engine.
Diesel Engine:
- The diesel engine works on the principle of the diesel cycle.
- The diesel cycle consists of an isobaric process, an isochoric process, and two isentropic processes.
- The diesel engine is also called the name of compression ignition engine which is named after scientist Rudolf Diesel.
- In a diesel engine, the fuel and air do not get mixed before going into the combustion chamber.
- The fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber. The mixture of fuel and air takes place inside the combustion chamber only and then the piston compressed the air in the cylinder.
- The adiabatic compression takes place in the diesel engine which ignites the fuel.
- In a diesel engine, the fuel ignites spontaneously.
- The diesel engine has a higher compression ratio comparatively.
- The diesel engine produces high power relatively.
- In a diesel engine, low volatile fuel is used so it can be ignited by adiabatic compression.
- The diesel engine is ideal for heavy vehicles.
- The diesel engine consumes low fuel comparatively.
- The diesel engine has higher maintenance costs compared to the petrol engine.
