Tests On Mortar | Crushing Test | Tensile Strength Test | Adhesive Test

Basically three tests are done to check the quality of mortar. These are crushing test, tensile strength test and adhesive test.

To check the quality of mortar, we conduct these 3 tests.

  1. Crushing Test.
  2. Tensile Strength Test.
  3. Adhesive Test.

1. Crushing Test On Mortar

Crushing test on mortar

The crushing test on mortar is a compressive strength test performed to calculate the compressive strength of the mortar and the bond strength of the mortar used to hold them together.

This test is performed on a brickwork assembly, which is comprised of several layers of bricks that are bonded together using mortar.

The test consists of placing the brickwork assembly between two compression plates of a compression testing machine and applying a compressive load until the assembly fails.

The load is gradually increased until the assembly fails, and the maximum load required to break the assembly is recorded. Then, the crushing strength is obtained by dividing the maximum load by the cross-sectional area of the assembly.

The compressive strength of a brickwork assembly is affected by a number of factors, including the quality of the bricks, the bond strength of the mortar, the thickness of the mortar joints, and the type of masonry construction.

Crushing test on brick with mortar is an important quality control measure that ensures the strength and durability of masonry structures in the construction industry.

2. Tensile Strength Test

Tensile strength test on mortar

The process of testing the tensile strength of mortar involves placing the prepared mortar in a rectangular mould that has a central cross-sectional area of 38mm x 38mm.

Once the mortar has cured, the briquette is pulled under the grips of a tensile testing machine, and the ultimate load at which the briquette fails is recorded.

The tensile strength of the mortar is then calculated by dividing the load by the central cross-sectional area of the briquette.

This method of testing is specific to mortar, and may not be applicable to other materials.

To ensure accurate and reliable results, carefully follow the testing protocol and use the appropriate equipment. The composition of the mortar should be carefully considered when interpreting the test results.

3. Adhesive Test

Adhesive test on mortar

To test the adhesive strength of mortar, two bricks are placed together and held in place with the mortar.

The top brick is suspended from an overhead support while a board is hung from the lower brick. Weights are added to the board until the bricks separate.

The force required to separate the bricks is divided by the area of contact to determine the adhesive strength of the mortar.

This method helps ensure that the mortar is strong enough to hold the bricks together and meet the required standards.
