What is Theodolite?
Theodolite is a surveying instrument that is used to measure horizontal and vertical angles.
In this instrument relative position of points can be determined by measuring horizontal and vertical angles.
Components of Digital Theodolites:
A digital theodolite comprises a telescopic instrument hanging in its base. On the top of the telescope, sight is used to align the target. A focusing knob is used to clear the target. The eyepiece is utilized to find the target. An object lens is provided on the opposite side of the telescope to sight and, magnify the target as needed.
All the parts of a digital theodolite are the same as non-digital theodolite except liquid crystal display (LCD). This crystal display shows the treading of the targeted object. The liquid crystal display controls the setting of the device.
Leveling is done by using plumb bobs and the spirit or bubble level.
Working Principle of Digital Theodolite:
Before starting surveying work, theodolite is set on the ground surface with the help of a plumb bob. Thereafter, the device is leveled with the ground surface with the help of spirit level.
A telescopic device is used after the completion of the leveling process. This telescopic device shows horizontal and vertical angles on the screen.
Advantages of Theodolite:
- It measures both horizontal and vertical angles.
- It has an Internal magnifying optical system.
- It has an electronic reading system.
- It provides greater accuracy.
- Theodolite is appropriate for both flat and sloped ground surfaces.
- It’s not affected by wind.
- There is no need to repeat readings.
